Show Notes

In this episode I’m going to tell you why I gave up social media and you might want to at least think about doing it as well.

Now I just want to preface this by saying that the reasons why may not be what you think. Especially if you think it was all because of the overarching dominice of progressive, socialism even borderline fascist amount of hatred on social media. I will admit that is part of it but not as much as you would assume. And it’s not because I’m constantly getting hit on by these sexy women that look like models that want to be my friends on Facebook or do private messages on Twitter. I don’t need to have them to remind me that I am the best looking thing on 18 wheels. Because I already know that. Most of the reason I’ve given up on it is coming from my own side of the political spectrum.

So let’s start from the beginning shall we?

Once upon a time… I might be getting up there in my years. According to my 14 yr old daughter I’m getting close to the time of hospice care. But I can remember the time before the internet. Before Google, Facebook, hell even before MySpace! I remember having friends that I would go and actually be in the same room with and talking without a phone staring me in the face. We actually interacted with each other. We laughed, pulled pranks, went cruising, played music. Since the advent of the internet and social media the world is supposed to be more closer than ever but we are in actuality more separated than ever. It has allowed a certain small percentage of the population to create the appearance that that small percentage is the majority. Some say that it is really the majority of opinion. But I tend to not believe that. We all know that just because you read it on the internet it must be true. Right? But after travelling the country, talking with people not on the internet, overhearing conversations on the cb and just observing people as they go about their daily lives I’ve come to realize that we, as humans, are completely different in real life compared to our online alter egos. Some of us are the same. Like myself and some other podcasters/bloggers. But for the most part people seem to pretend that they are someone else online not like they are posing as someone else but rather they tend to be different online. Almost like they change personalities. I don’t know what it is. Maybe mental illness is more common than we know. Maybe everyone needs medication. Or maybe people feel like they can let their guard down online and just say anything they wouldn’t say in real life. Maybe people think this is what they are supposed to do online and they don’t realize their are real people on their that is reading, watching or listening to what they are saying. But, again I tend to believe that it is not real. I personally know of lots of internet marketers that start websites to sell products. Many of those websites are not related to each other in any way. But they are all run by the same person. They can be running 15-20 websites a week, driving traffic, selling products, getting paid advertising. Some of them are so ironic it makes me literally laugh. For example, a blog about how socialism is the perfect solution for the US and calling for the banishment of capitalism. And yet it’s selling advertisements with Google Ads and ever selling a couple of dvd’s or paid subscriptions for a podcast. Oh the irony of an anti-capitalistic website using capitalism to fund itself. And they cant even see their own hypocrisy. For example Mark Zuckerburg, founder of Facebook. Flaming heart, dyed in the wool democrat/socialist. A multi billionaire capitalist because of…socialism? Nope.

Moving On I have actual real life friends on Facebook. They think they are super smart when it comes to politics. They are surprised when they find out that I’m a registered Republican. They always ask why? Because it doesn’t matter what you call yourself on paper. It’s who you cast your vote for and why. I firmly believe that you never vote against a candidate. You vote for someone that best matches your personal values. One of my very close friends was surprised that since I’m a Libertarian that I wasn’t a Bernie Sanders supporter. I honestly think this friend has abandoned me because I pointed out to him that if you call yourself a Libertarian and support a socialist like Sanders you were lying about being a Libertarian. Libertarians believe in less government and Socialists believe in more. Libertarians are fairly simple to understand.

  • Dont touch my stuff
  • Dont touch my money
  • Leave me alone

It’s a pretty simple philosophy. Not hard to figure out that you would not support an avowed socialist, ever! I also have other friends who say they are Libertarians but are actually Anarchists. It would be awesome if people would take some time to learn the definitions of words before actually using them. But these people are only a small part of why I’m giving up on social media. The ones that are making me give it up are actually on my side of the political spectrum.

I Hate Stupidity and Hypocrisy Ever since Facebook and Twitter got caught ghosting post of Conservatives there has been a constant uproar on about it. They rant and rave. They dominate talk radio and right leaning podcasts and blogs. Decrying about how Apple, Facebook, Twitter and all these big companies are censoring their speech ala Alex Jones. They scream it’s not constitutional. Is it? Did Apple censor Alex Jones by removing him from itunes? Yes. Was it against the Constitution? No. Here’s the reason that everybody keeps missing on this subject. The United States Constitution is not a document that states what the government can do for its legal citizens. It states, rather simply what the government CAN NOT DO! I have to point this out constantly because I really don’t think there is but a handful of people including Senators and Reps who have actually read the damn thing.

The first amendment:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Tell me where in there do you read that a business such as itunes, media hosting or even the press has to allow you to have a voice? I am sick of hearing my friends, on my own side, scream about Twitter and Facebook ghosting their posts. “They are discriminating against us”! And I agree, they are! But it’s not illegal! That first amendment keeps the government off the peoples backs. People are free to do or say what they want. Even if you don’t like what someone says. We have that right. Along with that right comes the right not to listen to those you don’t want to. Here is what I don’t understand. These people are all self avowed capitalists. Right? So why hasnt at least one of them gotten the idea to create a Conservative version of Facebook or Twitter? Call it Consevbook or whatever. A social media site that is biased towards Conservative values. Are they afraid they cant compete with Facebook and Twitter? Maybe came a little too late to the game? Probably but this is America and an individual can do whatever they want to do with their life. Maybe, maybe someone with some coding chops could just take something from this list and run with it! When did Conservatives and Libertarians stop being the doers and start being the winners of the world? I mean seriously just STOP! If you want to be true to yourself and your beliefs you will stop bitching about Facebook and Twitter while on Facebook and Twitter. Just get off of social media that is run by your opposition and quit expecting them to cater to you. We all griped about the baker that refused to bake a cake for a gay couple and complained about how it was against his rights to be punished for adhering to his right to practice his religion. Just as the gay couple had no right to his services you have no right to the services offered by Apple, Facebook or Twitter. Oh, there’s that damn hypocrisy thing again. Only it’s on my side. So I’ve put my money where my mouth is. I’m not even going to bother login into these social media sites to delete my accounts. I will keep the Twitter that I set up for this show but that is the only social media I will maintain. Unless I am asked to run one for a client I will never do social media again. Not because of the opposition but because of my own side.

What about you? Are you going to put your money where your mouth is or are you going to continue to be a hypocrite?
